Recorded this song this morning (2/9/2008) at church. I wrote the tune several years ago on the Tinwhistle. In honor of that, I 'whistled' the melody in the middle. Hope you like! Pianist Justin Sanner performs his improvisation titled Rain from his improvised set of pieces titled The Seasons. Justin is a piano instructor in San Francisco. Here in San Francisco, since the City is almost an island (surrounded by water on three sides), we have very subtle seasons. We basically have two main seasons. We have rain in December through February and fog off and on the rest of the year, with no rain at all. So our Winter season is really our rainy season which is why this season (Winter) is titled Rain for my improvisation. I hope that's not too confusing. A couple of years ago with my recording equipment running I improvised this piece for piano. Even though it looks like I'm using a score in the video, there is no score for this piece, at least at this time. To re-create this piece for the video, I went back and listened to my personal CD recording of my improvisation of what I played and how I played it so as to play the piece as closely to the original improvisation as I could. So all that I'm reading on the score on my piano is the melody line which I wrote down for roughly two-thirds of the piece that I transcribed from my CD. This song is by A Fine Frenzy and is called Almost Lover. I believe it is written by Alison Sudol, but I could be wrong there. Someone requested that I play this song so after a day of practice I did! I had only heard the original a few times before I tried the solo piano version which is why in a few parts it may not follow the melody perfectly. I threw in a keychange at the end that isn't originally in the song just spur of the moment =) I hope you enjoy! Played by Matthew Tavis Johnson.
