*SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE. DON'T READ THE DESCRIPTION UNTIL YOU'VE WATCHED THE WHOLE MOVIE.* Some people are happy with who they are. Some aren't. Derek and Amy were best friends since they were in diapers, but it wasn't until recently that the two went goth/punk/emo. Derek was fine with who he was, but Amy wasn't. She didn't like being the "creepy little goth girl." So she decided to bleach her hair and go 'prep'. Things seemed better that way. Amy was getting the attention she wanted from the popular girls, as she made friends with the leader of the pack -- Megan -- and her followers. Soon after, Amy's crush asked her out. It seemed better for Amy. But not at all better for Derek. The next day after Amy's drastic change, Derek, with a broken heart, tells Amy off. "You're a stupid poser, and all you care about is yourself!" "Look, all I wanted was a better image for myself. So I don't care what you have to say." She said that in the snobbiest tone ever. Derek slapped her. "Leave me alone until you're back to your normal self." And he took off for school. Amy realized the mistake she made. She had just lost her only true friend. Amy ran back inside her house, ashamed of going to school that day. She spent the whole day in her room, wondering where she went wrong. She finally drifts off to sleep and dreams of her and Derek. But she and him are dancing closely, and kissing, too. Amy finally wakes up from her dream (or nightmare?), and rushes to the mirror. She looks at herself carefully, and the image before her suddenly changes. Her reflection is now her old self, yelling at her for what she has done. Amy's reflection then shows a reflection of Derek and Amy, together, making out. "You want this," the reflection says. "You may not have realized it yet because you're too caught up in your identity crisis, but you and him are meant to be." Amy is speechless. "Want to know why he's mad at you? Because you've broken his heart. Derek loves you, my friend. And not like a best-friend, like a girlfriend. He doesn't like what you've become, and he doesn't like that you're going off with boys that only care about being popular. He wants to be with you, Amy. But you haven't seen it yet." Amy nods to her reflection. "Thank you." But whether or not she was dreaming, Amy makes another decision about her image. She comes to school the next day with her old, black hair and her old image. She finds Peter giving Derek a load of crap, but once Peter sees Amy, he approaches her with a kiss. Amy pushes him away. "Peter, look. I... Uhh... We're through." "Whatever. Your loss." Peter walks away, but Megan is the next to approach. She isn't too happy that Amy gave up her popularity. "Get lost," she mutters, and pushes Amy away. Derek isn't too happy with that. He storms up to Megan and slaps her across the face. And after that, Derek apologizes to Amy. Amy accepts his apology, sealing it with a unexpected kiss. "I've realized what I've done was wrong, Derek. I'm sorry for breaking your heart." "But, how did you know that I had a crush on you?" Amy smiles. "A little birdie told me." At tournaments, it feels like, for once, you actually get to live as loud as you want. It's worth the sacrifices, its worth all the bullshit, because if you work hard enough, a sunday will roll around, and you'll be in the huddle, screaming, with your hand in, one among ten, playing for the world title, and suddenly all those cliches that you ever heard make sense, and you, are defined.
