Rough Trade was a Canadian new wave rock band in the 1970s and 1980s. The band are most famous for their 1981 hit "High School Confidential", one of the first explicitly lesbian-themed Top 40 hits in the world. The band began in 1968, when Carole Pope and Kevan Staples began performing as "O". The following year. In 1970, they changed their name to "The Bullwhip Brothers". In 1975, the band became Rough Trade, adding Joanne Brooks, Rick Gratton, Happy Roderman, John Lang and Marv Kanarek to the lineup. The band, through their combination of hard-edged new wave rock and raw sexuality (Pope often performed in bondage attire), became a popular draw on Toronto's live music circuit through their regular shows at Grossman's. In 1980, the band's lineup changed, with most of the backing musicians leaving and being replaced by Sharon Smith, Jon Cessine, Bucky Berger, Patricia Cullen and Terry Wilkins . Also that year, the band landed a record contract with True North Records. Their first album, Avoid Freud, was released later that year, and the controversy around the raunchy lesbian-themed single "High School Confidential" made them stars. They released one album each year until 1985, scoring at least one significant hit, including "Weapons", "All Touch" and "Crimes of Passion", from each album. Although not as widely remembered as "High School Confidential" today, "All Touch" was the band's most successful single on the Canadian charts during their career. Carole Pope (born August 6, 1950 in Manchester, England) is a Canadian rock singer, whose provocative blend of hard-edged New Wave rock with explicit homoerotic and BDSM-themed lyrics made her one of the first openly lesbian pop stars in the world. She is the sister of Emmy Award-winning television producer and screenwriter Elaine Pope. Pope won the Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist in 1981, and subsequently won the Juno Award for Best Female Vocalist in 1982 and 1983. She and Staples co-wrote the 1983 single "Transformation", recorded by Nona Hendryx. During the 1980s Rough Trade won a Genie Award, and earned four gold and two platinum records.

Cimmeron went on to release the Indie single "My Heart's True To You" written by Debra and Ed Legenbauer which received airplay on country stations from New York to California.In 2002, Debra and her band, Soulgrass, completed their self titled CD. Two singles, including an original written by Debra, were released to Bluegrass radio and received airplay on nearly 400 stations. The Soulgrass version of "Love Please Come Home" was also added to the playlist for cable television's "Music Choice." Soulgrass performed at many venues and were featured performer's on a number of live radio and television programs in the Southeast. Debra recently teamed up with Jeff Silverman, of Palette Productions. Jeff is a veteran producer, songwriter, musician and singer. Together Debra and Jeff have written and produced 7 songs for her "I Can't Remember To Forget You" EP. The "I Can't Remember" video was also completed and is a joint project between Palette Productions and Sowelu Entertainment, with Shari Belafonte and Sam Behrens. Debra continues to work on additional songs for the full version of the CD along with a DVD which will include 5.1 surround mixes and bonus materials. Starr, Chico and Bunny Debarge, Tim Weisberg, Jackie Graham, B.J. Thomas and Nick Gilder. He co-wrote "Religion of the Heart" for Springfield's KARMA cd.
