Violence escalates at Islamabad mosque
Hello on this Tuesday, the 10 day of July 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline. At least fifty militant students and eight Pakistani commandos are dead following fierce fighting this morning at an Islamabad mosque. The violence erupted soon after talks between the government and radical Islamic militants failed. The two groups have been in a week-long standoff as the government faces heavy resistance from students seeking Taliban-style rule in Islamabad. U.S. Senator David Vitter is apologizing for his phone number turning up in the records of the so-called D.C. Madam. The Louisiana lawmaker says he's gone through marriage counseling and received forgiveness from his wife. Vitter says his number appeared on old phone records of the escort service, Pamela Martin and Associates, before he ran for Senate. The 46-year-old Republican was elected to the Senate in 2004. He and his wife have four children. Iraqi and U.S. officials are warning of a possible bloodbath and political meltdown if U.S. troops pull out of Iraq. The U.S. ambassador to Iraq and Army General David Petraeus say the progress report to Congress regarding the war in September would not be politically skewed to back President Bush's call of keeping troops in Iraq. The Iraqi foreign minister also says the dangers of pulling out could vary from civil to regional wars. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, of NAACP, has symbolically buried the racially charged N-word. Yesterday, thousands lined the downtown streets of Detroit, Michigan for a funeral service. A horse-drawn carriage carried a pine coffin adorned with black roses. Detroit's mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and rap pioneer Kurtis Blow rallied the crowd, saying they're burying everything that goes with the N-word too, such as pimps and ho's.
