DON'T BECOME A STATISTIC!
Use electrical holiday decorations safely (Arlington, Va.) - Millions of families are beginning to decorate their homes with a variety of electrical products as the holiday season gets under way. While brightly-colored lights and other electrical decorations help make the season cheerful, improper or inattentive use of these products could result in tragedy. According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), nearly one-third of all residential fires occur during the winter months. Each year, holiday-season fires cause 2,600 injuries and more than $930 million in damage. Many of these tragic incidents could be prevented by following some simple safety tips from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI): Before decorating, read and follow the manufacturers' instructions for installing and maintaining all decorative electrical products. Carefully inspect light strings and extension cords for signs of wear-fraying, peeling or abraded cords; broken plugs, bulbs or sockets-and discard any that are not in like-new condition. Never connect more than three strands of lights to one string. Use only lights, cords and other decorations that have been certified by United Laboratories (UL), CSA International or other safety certification body. Use extension cords only temporarily and only across short distances. Never run power cords under rugs or use near water. Make sure not to overload electrical circuits. Keep outdoor extension cords free of snow and standing water. Dry, cut trees can ignite from the smallest spark - keep your holiday tree well-hydrated. Never put electric lights on a metal tree - current could leak from the lights and electrocute anyone who comes into contact with the tree. ESFI reminds you to ALWAYS turn off and unplug electrical decorations before you leave the house or retire for the night. Using electricity safely will help to keep your family safe during this joyous holiday season. For more information about electrical safety, go to www.electrical-safety.org. Founded in 1994 through a joint effort between Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is North America's only non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety in the home and workplace. ESFI is a 501(c)(3) organization funded by electrical manufacturers and distributors, independent testing laboratories, utilities, safety and consumer groups, and trade and labor associations. ESFI sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May, and engages in public education campaigns and proactive media relations to help reduce property damage, personal injury and death due to electrical accidents. The Foundation does not engage in code or standard writing or lobbying and does not solicit individuals. For additional electrical safety information, visit the Foundation's web site at www.electrical-safety.org or call 703-841-3229.
