Under Control" is a new short from Sam Copland and John Richards at Macro Creative House. The film effectively juxtaposes the typical domestic situation of a thirty something woman, with her parallel life -- the nature of which may come as something of a surprise. Shot on digital video, the film achieves a cinematic look. In fact something about the opening shot (perhaps the combination of the score, the movement of the camera and the choice of caption style), evoking the kind of polished feel seen in a Richard Curtis movie. We are immediately introduced to the main character played by Cathy Gilmore. She brings a sense of normality to the first situation in the film. Ordinariness is not usually an attribute at the top of an aspiring actress' wish list, however in this case it helps set the scene and in what is partly a study of someone's identity, this is crucial. As with many short films there is a definite 'twist' in more ways than one, so it is difficult to discuss the plot of the film without revealing too much. What I will say though is that the subject of the film inhabits the kind of gangster underworld which has been a pre-occupation of British film makers perhaps too much in recent years. However what redeems "Under Control" is the way it takes a situation which could be the stuff of "Lock Stock ..." and it's many imitations but it strips back the cliché, hammy dialogue and crap suits leaving the audience to imagine for themselves the kind of existence which would involve finding oneself playing out the events depicted in the film.

Showreel from a few years ago from my screen acting class. Scenes from Misery and All About Eve. I have no clue why it has gone out of synch! I wanted to do one over the top scene and one where I looked like a reasonable, not mad, person. I am playing the Kathy Bates role (Annie Wilkes) in Misery and the Celeste Holm (Karen Richards) role in All About Eve. I am not doing an American accent in either scene because the person in charge of the class told us to avoid accents (I wanted to do them though.) I haven't uploaded it before because of a)technical problems and b)I didn't really want this to be the FIRST thing people saw when they looked at my videos page!
